Remember yesterday when I wrote that panicked journal entry stating I was gonna slash my wrists with a rusted can if I couldn't figure out Illustrator?! Behold my first creation in Adobe Illustrator!!!

Here is the result of listening to 3 days of tutorials. It took me about 31/2 hrs when it would have taken me 1 in Photoshop.

But I stuck with it, Dammit!

There are still things I don't understand. Can you not add gradients to stokes? What about gradual masks that are gradients? I'm still working on it!!

Wow! If this is what your art looks like just after learning the program, I can't wait to see your stuff once you have mastered it. NICE

Can I ask what tutorial you used for the dotted lines? Was it one of the ones on that site you posted in that journal?

yes it was, but all you have to do is create a stroke, then double click stroke on the top menu, then click dashed line. You can change the distances between the dashes

I always like it when something is easier than it seems like it will be. Thanks!

I've still not figured out how to add gradients to strokes...

I usually make it a thin shape and then add the gradient. 'Tis quite loverly for your first vector! And I always love a good fish-girl!

Don't give up. I used to only work on photoshop, but once I became a professional graphic designer I sorta married Illustrator. At first it can be a pain, but later when you can scale your work to any size and figure mesh gradients, perspective and masks you'll be happy to add this new tool to your arsenal.

This illustration is an awesome start!

A job well done, I say! :D

And as far as I can recall, you can't add gradients to strokes. But you could convert the strokes to a shape and apply a gradient to that, maybe? Gradients as masks do work, though I find it trickier to control gradients in Illustrator than in Photoshop...

Nope, there are no such thing as gradual masks in Illustrator and you can't add gradients to strokes unfortunately but there's a trick around that. Simply select the stroke, go to Object>Expand and then click the OK button. Your stroke has now been made into a fill which will allow you to now add gradients. Hope that helps! I've got more cool tricks if you ever feel stuck :D

Oh well I believe in some of the CS versions you don't have that option for whatever reason. I have CS3 and I can't put gradients onto strokes unless I make it into a path first.
